Shaft Terms, Explained the Way We Explain Them on the Bench
You don't need to memorize this before booking a fitting, but it helps to know what we're talking about when we compare options.
Flex
How much a shaft bends during the swing, generally labeled ladies, senior, regular, stiff, or extra stiff — but two shafts with the same label can still feel very different.
Weight
Total shaft weight, usually measured in grams. Heavier shafts often improve control at higher swing speeds; lighter shafts can help players struggling to generate speed.
Torque
Resistance to twisting during the swing, measured in degrees. Lower torque generally suits faster, more aggressive transitions.
Kick Point
Where a shaft bends most during the downswing — low, mid, or high — which influences launch angle and the feel of the release.
Material
Steel generally offers more consistency and feedback for iron shafts; graphite offers lighter weight and vibration dampening, common in driver and fairway wood shafts.
The Same Flex Label Can Play Two Different Ways
Shaft manufacturers don't follow a single shared standard for what "stiff" or "regular" actually means in terms of measured stiffness, so two shafts with the same printed label can play noticeably different in your hands. That's why we fit shafts on the launch monitor against your actual transition and tempo, rather than picking based on the label alone.
This matters just as much for iron shafts as for driver shafts — an iron shaft that's too soft for your transition can add unwanted spin and a floaty ball flight, even if the head and loft are otherwise well matched to your swing.
